Former husband alleges Mel B of suffering from drug and alcohol addiction

In another high-profile drug addiction case, Melanie Janine Brown, the Spice Girls singer also known as Mel B, has been accused of falsely putting the blame for her bruises from drug addiction on domestic violence. The allegations were filed by her former husband Stephen Belafonte in a new legal document.

Referring to an old incident that took place in 2014, 42-year-old Belafonte further alleged that Mel B misleadingly claimed to be hospitalized after he smashed her head into a door. Repudiating the above claim, he has alleged that the ‘Stop’ singer was overdosed on drugs and had sustained bruises from an electrocardiography (EKG) machine and intravenous therapy (IV) drip during her stay in a hospital. He further added that Mel B has always been into drug and alcohol addiction and has indulged in indecent behaviors in her inebriated state.

The documents also suggested that Mel B has been seeking therapy for her addiction for a long time. However, due to lack of any success, Belafonte had requested the therapist to stop the medication as he feared the risk of overdose. The couple got divorced a year ago after settling the long battle over wealth acquisition and custody of their daughters.

Association between stardom and addiction

Addiction among the celebrities is not new. Although earlier the news of a celebrity suffering from addiction created sensation, they are now increasingly opening up and confessing about their tussle with substance abuse.  Like any chronic disease, addiction can affect anybody, irrespective of age, gender, status or community. Some of the primary risk factors of addiction include genetic predisposition, environmental stressors, chronic pain or illness, traumatic experiences, family record of addiction, self-medication and mental disorders.

Often, celebrities are presumed to have a greater access to addictive substance owing to the fortune they mine for themselves with their stardom. However, their money and fame have very less do with their developing addiction. These factors may have some contribution, however, they do not make them prone to developing an addiction. Admired for their glamour, luxurious lifestyle and access to other comforts, celebrities are public figures with tens of thousands of fan following.

They are often unable to strike a balance between their personal and professional lives. The inability to multitask and cope with the adulation of the fans starts intimidating their life by wreaking havoc on their mental health. Hence, they are under the constant pressure of being perfect, healthy and inspiring. In the absence of adequate support and care, they often resort to drugs, alcohol, etc. to overcome fatigue, stress, loneliness and tiredness. The regular use of these substance leads to increased dependence and tolerance on them, which steadily transforms into a full-fledged addiction.

Suffering from addiction is as painful for a celebrity as it is for a common man. Additionally, the cravings and compulsions experienced by them are as challenging as witnessed by anybody else suffering from substance addiction. Though consumed for deliverance from pain, the consumption of drugs and alcohol can lead to self-destruction. Realizing the menace of substance abuse, many celebrities have in recent times opened up about their struggle with it, such as John Mayer, Ed Sheeran, Alec Baldwin, etc.  Unfortunately, the world has lost many talented musicians, actors, sportspeople, etc. due to addiction to alcohol and drugs, such as Michael Jackson, Heath ledger, Amy Winehouse, Whitney Houston, etc.
